I received my autoimmune disease diagnosis(自身免疫疾病诊断) in 2009, and for the

first few months , I was in a very bad place. I was suffering from severe anxiety and panic attacks

on a daily basis. I was no longer able to function as a “normal" person. During that time , all I

could do at best was to move about the house trying to accomplish a few chores, and prepare

meals.

After a few months on the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol, my intense tiredness improved and

I slowly regained some energy. That is when I tried to follow my doctor"s advice to exercise.

I clearly remember my first attempt. I was still weak, but somehow,I thought that if I

could push through and pretend I had a normal life that things would get better. So,I went out

and started running in the little neighborhood park. Unfortunately,I didn"t last even five minutes

and came back home, totally crashed. It took me several days to recover. After that first brush

with exercise,I understood that I would have to start slow. I began going on daily walks with my

husband around the block. Slowly, we went further and further, and my strength came back

progressively.

After walking,I started to altend yoga classes. I remember barely making it through my

first class. My muscles were weak and trembling by the time I rolled up my mat. But I was also

so happy to be able to get out of the house, mix with other people and have a social life!

After yoga, I ventured into activities a little bit more strenuous, but still gentle on the

joints.I was going to the swimming pool to do laps and riding my bike. Recently, after almost

four years on the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol,I was finally able to really up my game and start

exercising regularly with a personal trainer.

It is said that everything his brush touched tuned to gold. But in truth, the value of his

work could be worth more than any precious metal. Spanish artist Pablo Picasso(1881-1973),

one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, painted two of the world"s 10 most expensive

paintings,according to the Guardian.

Between 1907 and 1913,Picasso and his colleague Georges Braque (1882-1963) started

a revolution in painting. Before that, paintings were like windows-they were painted to look as

if they had depth. You could tell which objects were "close" to you and which objects were"far

away", as if the picture were a window you were looking through. But Picasso and Braque didn"t

want to paint like that anymore. To them,a painting was marks and lines on a flat surface. They

thought a guitar can look very different depending on which angle one looks at it from, so they

broke the guitar up into pieces. It was an analytical approach to art that gave this style of

painting its name: analytic cubism.

But why did they feel such a need to change things? Science was turning people"s ideas

upside down.German-born physicist Albert Einstein"s theory of relativity was proving that what

we knew about time and space was wrong. It"s often said that Picasso was like Einstein wearing a

painter"s clothing. And it was not only science that was making waves. New political movements

were on the rise. The world was becoming different, artists needed to start seeing and painting it

differently.

The famous and terrifying painting Guernica (1937) shows the horror of the bombing of the

town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). In the painting, you can

actually see the sky falling. Picasso couldn"t have painted it without the skills he learned during

his cubist period. Breaking a guitar into pieces was his preparation for showing the world being

blown to pieces.

28. What can we know about Picasso from paragraph 1?

A. His brush has magic.

B. His works are highly valued.

C. His contribution is over-recognized.

D. His paintings are the most expensive.

29. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A. The feature of Picasso"s paintings.

B.The background of Picasso.

C. The cultural meaning of cubism.

D. The advance of painting techniques.

30.What contributed to Picasso"s way of painting according to paragraph 3?

A. Einstein"s theory.

B. The changing world.

C. The skills he learned.

D. The pressure from his colleagues.

31. What"s the purpose of the text?

A. To show the development of art.

B. To honor one of the greatest painters.

C. To argue for Picasso"s way of painting.

D. To compare Picasso"s paintings with those before.

A study has found that people who are literate had a third the risk of developing dementia

(痴呆症)compared with those who had never learnt to read and write. The scientists behind

the study suggested that learning to read may reveal new intellectual worlds and promote a life of the mind that might help to keep brains sharp into old age.

"If one acquires the ability to read and write, that opens up opportunities to engage in

cognitively stimulating activities,"Miguel Arce Rentería,from Columbia University Medical

Centre, said."Even with low education, you can read newspapers and books. That provides

opportunities for constant stimulation that can last for the rest of your life. Maybe that might

confer protection and reduce the effects of dementia."

The research published in the journal Neurology, looked at almost 1,000 older people in

New York, chosen because they had received little education as children. The average age was

77 and more than 90 percent were immigrants. All of them had had four years or less of

education, with about a quarter describing themselves as illiterate.

Among those who did not read,35 percent had dementia at the start of the study,

increasing to 48 percent four years later. Among the literate respondents, 18 percent had

dementia at the outset, rising to 27 percent. After adjusting for social class, age and other risk

factors, the scientists calculated that illiterate people were three times more likely to have

dementia. They were also twice as likely to contract it over the four years of the investigation.

It is impossible to say for certain that the link means that literacy delays dementia. It may

be that people who managed to get a better education before arriving in the US were also

different in other ways. However,Dr Arce Rentería said:"What this provides is strong evidence

for a pretty strong link."

32. What is the finding of the study?

A. Dementia slows people"s reading.

B. Dementia can be cured by reading.

C. Literacy may sharpen our minds.

D. Literacy makes dementia less likely.

33. What does Miguel Arce Rentería stress?

A. The procedure of the study.

B. The importance of education.

C. The reasons for the findings.

D. The requirements for the research.

34. Which of the following can replace the word “outset"” underlined in paragraph 4?

A. Interval. B. Core. C. Beginning. D. End.

35. How did the researchers draw the conclusion?

A. By carrying out tests.

B. By making a comparison.

C. By working on an assumption.

D. By analyzing different answers.

observing carefully is also of great importance, and a good leader knows how to listen effectively

when communicating with others.

It"s a well-known fact that, whatever field you wish to work in,leadership skills are necessary for anyone who desires to have a successful career. 40

This past summer, I joined my sister"s family for their annual Adirondack vacation in a rented

cottage on a lake, the same place my family has stayed since I was a little kid. There are plenty of

activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and sand castle building on the beach.

By the third day, I had noticed that my ten-year-old niece, Jannie, had spent most of her

time watching cable TV and browsing through the gift shops in town. Not exactly the wilderness

experience I remembered from my youth. So, at dinner, I told Jannie we should hike to the top

of the mountain across the lake the following morning, which was called Rocky Point because

the peak is bare and rock-covered.

"Well.”replied Jannie,"Tomorrow there are some shows on the Disney Channel, so I"m

going to be pretty busy. "

"When your mother and I used to come here when we were your age. We were too busy

swimming and hiking up mountains.”

"Sounds more like punishment than a vacation."She shrugged her shoulders.“Besides,I

don"t think I can walk that far.”

When I said it only took a half-hour of steady walking to get to the top. She grumbled, "Fine,

I"ll go. ”I knew she was agreeing just to shut me up, but I would take anything I could get.

The next morning was a perfect day for a hike, with sunshine and clear skies. I got up

early and took some sandwiches and water bottles, which I tucked into my backpack along with

the bug spray and the camera.

Jannie came shuffling downstairs, sighed dramatically, rolled her eyes and announced in a

very unenthusiastic, robot-like voice.“I"m ready to go hiking, Uncle David."Anyway, we

climbed into my car and drove to the trailhead about ten minutes away. As we stood at the edge

of the parking lot and looked down the shaded trail that led into the woods. "I still not sure this

is a good idea, but if you and Mom could do it,I can too, I guess.”
